From an earlier edition FROM THE AWARD-WINNING SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR 1936. Europe is in turmoil. The Nazis have marched into the Rhineland. In Russia, Stalin has unleashed his Great Terror. Spain has erupted in civil war. In Berlin, a young Englishwoman evades the Gestapo to deliver vital papers to a Jewish scientist. Within weeks, she is found dead in her Cambridge bedroom, a silver syringe clutched in her fingers. In a London club, three senior members of the British establishment light the touch paper on a conspiracy that will threaten the very heart of government. Even the ancient colleges of Cambridge are not immune to political division. Dons and students must choose a side right or left, where do you stand? When a renowned member of the county set and his wife are found horribly murdered, a maverick history professor finds himself dragged into a world of espionage which, until now, he has only read about in books. But the deeper Thomas Wilde delves, the more he wonders whether the murders are linked to the death of the girl with the silver syringe - and, just as worryingly, to the scandal surrounding King Edward VIII and his mistress Wallis Simpson...Set against the drumbeat of war and moving from Berlin to Cambridge, from Whitehall to the Kent countryside, and from the Fens to the Aragon Front in Spain, this big canvas international thriller marks the beginning of a major new series from bestselling author Rory Clements.

I received an e-ARC of this novel through NetGalley and Bonnier Publishing Zaffre. Thank you.

For my first time reading a Rory Clements novel I really picked a doozie! I love to read a mystery novel set in a previous time period just to see how the author will present the day-to-day setting for me. This 1936 feels absolutely right. Sometimes I forget how many British citizens were sympathetic to the Hitler agenda and how that sympathy crossed all class lines. You would have thought that couldn't happen since the elite classes and the lower classes were so divided, and yet each group thought that what Hitler was offering would be best for their country. The atmosphere of espionage permeating all layers of British society is very well developed and this is one novel where you have to go all the way to the end to be really sure you know which side some of the characters are really on.

Two young British women go to Berlin for the Olympic Games and for some vacation time. One of them has a mission to perform which will have ramifications she could never have imagined. Cambridge University is filled with men who have secrets they don't want revealed and a plot develops to make sure that Edward VIII remains on the throne so his belief in the cause of the German Nazi party will result in an unshakeable ally for Hitler. Unfortunately for Edward, he is being pushed to make a choice between the throne of England and Wallace Simpson. Not only is she considered unsuitable because of her divorce, but she is also a Nazi sympathizer. How will events unfold behind the scenes to give us the results we know from history?

Yes, this is a work of fiction, but that doesn't stop the ideas of what went on behind the scenes during this turbulent time period from capturing my attention from first page to last. This story can be confusing at times because many of the characters are publicly following one line of political belief while privately working for another one. All of Europe was seething during this time, Russia, Spain, France, Germany, Britain - all with tangled political politics both in public and behind the scenes. I really liked the Thomas Wilde character. He's really quite a well rounded fellow; an American with an Irish mother, a Cambridge professor of history, birdwatcher, motorcycle enthusiast and interested in boxing. All of those interests ensure that Thomas can stick his nose into pretty much any investigation the author wants him to in future books in the series. I don't know that this will become a series, but there is certainly enough historical material available to allow for that. Now that I've seen what a great author of mysteries Clements is I'm going to have to check out one of those John Shakespeare novels I've seen for sale.
Rory Clements’ Corpus, the start of a new series, I assume, nods towards his well-established John Shakespeare, Tudor set spy thriller series. This is because, though set in that turbulent time of the mid-30’s where totalitarian politics are on the rise, and the only possible response to fascism appears to lead to war, his central character here is an academic, a historian, with a special interest in the politics of espionage in Elizabeth’s court, Robert Cecil and Walsingham.

Tom Wilde is an attractive hero, drawn unwillingly into mystery. An American, with strong links to the UK, he has sadness in his life, as a man whose beloved wife and child died in a car accident. He is no bed-hopping Lothario, though he is aware of feeling a strong attraction for Lydia, a fiercely intelligent literary graduate, poet and publisher, with strong anti-fascist and socialist views

It is 1936. No one of intelligence can be unaware that there are choices to be made. Spain is engaged in its own fight against Fascism. There are those engaged in furthering the influence of Fascism, and there are those engaged in countering that, and secrecies, and plots, are all around.

Meanwhile, in England, still a hushed up scandal, and possible constitutional crisis is looming. Edward VIII th is seriously enamoured of an American divorcee, Wallis Simpson. There are those who would see him go – as much for his politics as for anything to do with the constitutional crisis between the King’s position as nominal head of the Church of England, and his desire to marry a divorcee, Edward’s politics were also regard suspiciously. It was thought that he would be more likely to interfere politically, and was also regarded in Germany as being sympathetic towards the Nazi cause.

When a friend of Lydia’s dies in mysterious circumstances, Wilde is drawn into trying to help her find out what has happened – and a real twisty, turny, wheels within wheels, where does anyone’s real allegiance lie tale begins to play out.

This scores, both in page turning plot, and in interesting history.

My draw back from 5 star is the result of the action man finale, where our motorcycling academic hero physically tangles with the bad guys he has been heading towards unmasking. Some might enjoy the derring do, but I generally find that action man hero stuff gets pretty unconvincing, given the real fragility of blood, flesh and bone, even given the fact that adrenaline rushes can numb awareness of horrid injuries

I’m certainly interested in going further with Wilde, and what looks like an intelligent series, and hope for tone down of the more Bondian, blockbuster film stuff, remarkably unreal as it pretty well always is
Good WW II murder & spy novel, but not as good as his John Shakespear series.
Excellent thriller kept up suspense right to the end
