While I had heard the story of William Tell a lot as a kid, kids today don't even know who he was. The language is a little dense for a high school reader, but not unintelligible, so it would be OK reading for school I would think. Just difficult enough language to be a challenge, yet short enough to finish easily. The Kindle dictionary helps. There is a copy of the pact that the free people had (end notes). It is interesting in light of today's view of a maliable Constitution and maliable ethics. Which side would you stand on? Would you follow the powerful in Austria or would you value freedom? The notes are worth a read as well since they reference other characters not in the story.
Worth a read if you never read it. Worth a re-read if you read it long ago.

Wilhelm Tell Annotated eBook Friedrich Schiller Theodore Martin Reviews
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE SCREEN PLAY AS IT WOULD BE VERY ENTERTAINING TO WATCH AND BE A PART OF.
It's the great old story, but the writing style is long out of date, which it should be given the age of the story. It just makes it a bit harder to read, so if you aren't used to deciphering old history books or stories, this may not be for you.
For its age it reads very well. There is a nice element of suspense and we see a lot of medieval Switzerland.
a well-known story with the father, Wilhelm Tell, forced to shoot an apple off the head of his son. The tale takes place 500 years ago in the Swiss Alps. Very well-written play, reading like a script that you would be handed if you were rehearsing this on stage, complete with stagings, directions and backgrounds. For this reason, tho, I gave the rating of 3 stars, because it is not a short story, but a play.
The same things happen here, 500 years ago, as happen today wherever we have people in power suppressing the rights of the citizens. The government wants complete submission and the weapons of the people. It wants higher taxes and less rights given. While reading this, I could see that nothing has changed regarding the rulers & those being ruled.
The families here are very proud of their freedom and heritage. They love the land, the lakes and mountains. Honest, hard-working and self-ruling, they accept more and more encroachment on their freedom, until the politics just become too much to take any more.
Wilhelm Tell is just an average man in the village, but he is very well-respected for his strengths and skill with the bow & arrow. The country is already trying to figure out how to change the repression of their life-styles, when Tell accidently forgets to bow in submission while he is out walking with his son. The guards see this, and call the alarm that someone refuses to accept authority.
The head of the government is called, and decides to make an example of Tell. Tell apologizes to no avail. The ruler will kill Tell and his son, unless Tell shoots an apple off the head of his son.
Of course, this is an outrageous requirement, having to shoot a weapon at your son. We can feel all the drama and emotions of the characters as this tale is told. I would give it more stars except that I didn't prefer it written as a play. This was probably the style back then, in Shakespeare's time and era. I don't know enough about the history of the written word to comment about that, tho.
Nothing is too deep in this story; it moves along very well in adventure and intrigue.
All good
i somewhat knew the story, so I liked reading the whole story, get a better understanding of the German SwissIread alot of history because I have a Masters in history
This is a quick read, but it gives a glimpse of Swiss patriotism and alpine scenery.. Plus there's the gripping story of Wilhelm Tell and the evil thing the cruel viceroy asks of him... I'll read this to my kids to prepare them for a visit to the Alps.
